Welcome
Welcome to the Glen Eira website and to this small glimpse into the life of Glen Eira College. Even a quick perusal will give you an idea of:
* our wonderfully multicultural population
* our focus on creating every opportunity for success
* the breadth of our school life
* our unwavering commitment to school improvement
Congraulations to the VCE class of 2011!
As expected, the targets we set and rigorously worked towards during 2011 were achieved, giving us, for the second year running, our best results since 2001.
* 100% of students achieved satisfactory completion of the VCE
* Mean ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) score for 2011 cohort: 62 (an increase of 21% on 2009)
* Median study score: 28 (an increase of 12% on 2009)
* Nearly 20% of our students scored ATARs greater than 90 and 70% of students scored ATARs greater than 50
* 65% of our students were offered first round university places, an increase of 20% on 2009
* 14% of our students received first round offers to Melbourne University, an increase of 11% on 2009 and 2010. In addition, 11% received first round offers from Monash University, a 5% increase on 2010.
* 47% of students achieved final grades of B and above, an increase of 22% on 2009
* 6.2 % of study scores were 40 and above – an increase of 20% on 2009 and 2010 and a beacon in the community.
How was this achieved?
* A shared culture of high expectations of all students combined with dedicated teaching and support staff
* High Achievers Club –voluntary student club with regular meetings to focus on study and learning (100% of our High Achievers’ Club students were offered their 1st or 2nd VTAC preference)
* Rigorous preparation by staff and students in the preceding years
* Formal interviews with students at risk, 2-3 times per year
* Formal, compulsory Unit 3 / 4 practice exams
* Targeted 3 year study program run by Educate Elevate
* Increased participation in university enhancement studies and activities
* Formal recognition and rewards for student achievement and endeavour
* Acceleration and extension program (ACE) operating in junior school
* Homework Help program operating after-school twice a week
But that’s not all, there are even more reasons to celebrate:
* Our NAPLAN results showed that our Year 9 students exceeded the Learning Improvement expected across the state in all areas: Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar & Punctuation and Numeracy. This is cogent proof of the “value add” we offer our students
* Year 8 student, Melvin Li, was one of only 30 students to score 100% in the Rio Tinto Science competition which attracted more than 30,000 contestants
* Our new Learning Centre opened, allowing staff to explore innovative pedagogical approaches in a purpose built space
* Three year 11 students were accepted into Philosophy at Melbourne University in the MU Program for High Achieving students (MUPHAS)
* Two additional Melbourne University, Kwong Lee Dow, scholarships were awarded, recognising the scholastic potential of our current VCE students
How did all this happen?
A shared and unrelenting commitment to expecting the best of our students by the staff and school council at Glen Eira College.
