Student Voice
The Gecko – Student Magazine
In 2011 Glen Eira College students formed their own school magazine – The Gecko. Editions are published once a term and the magazine is distributed in the last week of term during Team Meetings. The magazine includes a range of articles, from book reviews, to recipes and reports on school events. There is also a gossip column, star signs and a super-quiz, as well as more informative, newsworthy articles on current media issues.
Ms Paddle, Ms Despault and Ms Naraynen

One of the highlights from the first edition was an interview with famous French actress, Clothilde Hesmes by Marine Carbonell and Zoe Dreadon. The two Year 9 students organised a meeting with the actress and conducted their interview after school. The first edition of the magazine was a success, but improvements have been made and students are already working on a second edition, due out at the end of term two. Congratulations to everyone involved and the Gecko welcomes contributions from any budding writers not yet involved.

‘Epic.’
Mitchell James, Year 7
‘I like the experience. It’s fun to write something and then see it at the end of the day, printed, with your name on it.’
Pavel Zakopaylo, Year 8
‘Gecko is a good extra-curricula program which helps to improve our language use and skills.’
Divya Jain, Year 10
‘Gecko is really good because if you’ve got something you think the entire school should know about, Gecko is the place to put it out there.’
Joel Brianton, Year 9
‘Gecko is a fun-filled activity which allows students access to important resources like the computers as well as some great editors to help give constructive criticism to help improve our writing.’
Kevin Wang, Year 8
‘I like being in Gecko because I like to express my opinion, write it down and have people read it.’
Michael Horovitz, Year 9
