Music

Music self played, is happiness self made.  (Quote from a 1920s Ukelele)
“Children must receive music instruction as naturally as food and with as much pleasure as they derive from a ball game – and this must happen from the beginning of their lives” Leonard Bernstein

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC
At Glen Eira College, we have a new, vibrant, instrumental music program. Since 2009, we have worked hard to develop an ensemble based program at the college, building the number or participants from around 12 students to close to 100. All students learning an instrument at the college are expected to participate in the ensemble program. Most ensembles are held during lunch time or after school. Students from the Glen Eira College English Language Centre are encouraged to participate in the instrumental program and associated ensembles. Ensembles perform regularly at college functions and, more recently, in the community. Ensemble participation is very important as one of the greatest joys is playing music with others and making new friends.
The following ensembles are currently running at the college:
-           Concert Band
-           Junior Concert Band
-           Fling (Flute and Violin chamber ensemble)
-           Percussion Ensemble
-           Small guitar ensembles
-           Choir
-           Student run “Glee” club
-           “The Blues Brothers” Stage Band
Our students participate in the Southern Metropolitan Region’s Instrumental Music Festivals including Singfest and the Intermediate and Junior Band festivals.

INSTRUMENTAL TUITION
At Glen Eira College, we offer an instrumental music tuition that is affordable and accessible to all. We hire instruments to students to facilitate learning, and students are expected to take these instruments home to practise and bring them to their weekly lesson.
Instrumental tuition is available on the following instruments: flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, bass guitar, percussion through the college. These lessons are provided free, but all students must pay a resource fee. Piano and voice lessons are provided by private teachers, but subsidised by the college
Instruments available for hire through the college include: flutes, clarinets, bass clarinet, alto and tenor saxophones, trumpets, trombones and a limited number of guitars.

For further detials please contact Robyn Keane, our Instrumental Music Program Coordinator at the college.
