Extensions and Enrichment Programs

Extension and enrichment takes many forms at Glen Eira College with many opportunities existing both inside and outside the classroom. Glen Eira runs an accelerated program, ACE, for students in years7 to 9. Students in this program have the option of taking VCE studies in year 10.

There are a variety of extension activities that happen outside of the classroom. Some of these are directly subject specific. Our students have excelled at the UNSW IT Challenge and the Rio Science Big Science Competition. There is also a lot of enrichment happening through lunchtime activities. Gecko, the student magazine, is published once a term, full of articles, interviews and reviews from the students.

For senior students, there is the weekly Controversy Café where they have an opportunity to sit down and discuss issues in the media. It provides a forum for serious discourse about many topics and allows senior students to express their opinions. Many students are also involved in regional constitutional conventions covering topics such as foreign aid or climate change.

Glen Eira College also participates in regional debating through the Debating Association of Victoria with some students representing the school at the State Parliament. There is also a house debating program that allows students to gain experience and confidence while competing against their peers.

Selected students also have the chance to represent the college at the Metlink Great Transport Race, where, for the last two years, we have narrowly missed out on a place in the finals. It’s a fun day of problem solving and navigation that builds teamwork and represents our students as positive role models in the community.
